It’s been a busy few days, and poor Len has been fighting an infection. He is thankfully on the mend now!
Yesterday, Kanata and I had our student recital. It was a blast! The kiddies played well, and we all had a really fun time. All those stories they had written about their pieces were a hit! Some of the highlights included Barack Obama walking into a bar for a beer on his birthday, a bird named Birdo Luongo, and a little fly named Mr. Fly getting squished by Joe in Joe’s kitchen. It was a riot!
Kanata and I played “Haru no Umi” by Michio Miyagi, a beautiful piece originally written for the koto and shakuhachi about the sea in springtime. Miyagi lost his eyesight at age 8, but he did see the ocean before then, and this piece is based on his memory of that. To get into the spirit of the music, Kanata wore a very special outfit:
(We forgot to take a picture together until we were outside and shivering in the cold. Whoops.)
Here is a performance of this piece on the original instruments:
I’m looking forward to the next recital, which will be sometime in May or June!
